The DBT skill self soothing is based around our 5 senses, smell, touch, taste, sound and vision. In this post I want to focus on smells as this is something I have been doing a lot.

Recently I have got really big on smells, maybe it’s because my awareness and mindfulness have increased and I’m more able to be in the moment and really appreciate them.

I have tried to think of day to day things that I can have around the house that can be easily available for self soothing. In this post I want to share just a few of the ideas I have and products that I’m loving at the moment.

I love the I love… range. Their chocolate fudge cake body wash is so nice when I’m showering or bathing and the body sprays are good for any time and small enough to pop in an emergency selfcare kit or bag when going out. They have lots of fruity flavours and smell so yummy.

Candles and wax melts are also a favourite at the moment and can make my living space feel really nice.

I am obsessed with these Fabulosa mini toilet sprays, it might sounds a bit of an odd one but I use them randomly around the house.

Other ways to self sooth with smells could include; cooking or baking, smelling sun cream, smelling your favourite perfume, essential oils and aromatherapy oils. I could probably make a list as long as my arm if I really sit and think about it as there are so many smells out there and so many that can be soothing for many different reasons.

I have also been making self soothing with smells part of my sleep routine, as I use ‘This works’ sleep pillow spray, aromatherapy oils and/ or night creams that have a calming sent.

This is one of the parts of therapy and DBT that it took a while for me to get on board with as I couldn’t see how that would help me but honestly you wont know until you give it a go.

Id love to know if there are any smells you find particularly helpful or any products or things that you use to self sooth with smell.
